An AI companion is a character run by a language model. It has a name, a personality and a memory of your conversation, and it answers in that voice. People use one for company, conversation practice or shared stories; it is software, not a person.

A general assistant answers questions and drafts emails. A companion is built for the conversation itself: it has a fixed personality, a backstory and a way of talking, and it stays in that role from one message to the next. Some are friends, some mentors, some romantic partners; the AI girlfriend is the romantic kind.

Model, Persona, Memory
Three parts make one. A language model writes each reply. A persona, a short written profile, tells it who the character is and how she speaks. A memory keeps a summary of your thread, so a detail you mentioned last week can come back. None of it is a person typing; the glossary explains the terms.

What It Cannot Do
A companion can sound caring, but it has no feelings and no life outside the chat. It can be wrong, it forgets what falls outside its memory, and it is no substitute for a doctor, a counsellor or friends. If talking to it ever makes you feel worse, step away.
Privacy and Safety Checks
Before you start, check where chats are stored, how long they are kept, whether they train the model and how to delete them. An app with adult characters should ask your age first. On Lazys, a chat is kept for up to 12 months after its last message, never used for AI training, and you can delete it at any time (privacy policy).
